Answering Your Organic Questions

Why should I eat Organic Chicken?
There are three reasons for wanting to eat organically:
a) for your health
b) for the animals health
c) for the health of the environment

I know that you are Organic but are you Free-Range? Yes we are. It is a requirement that all Certified Organic Chickens have access to outside runs.  This will lead to another question of   "but what about when it’s snowing and really cold outside”? It is true that when it is cold we do not open the doors; however, the chickens would not want to go out anyway.   We always keep the welfare of the animal at the center of our farming practices.

Are you like non-medicated chicken?
Certified organic chicken is not medicated.

What do you do if the birds get sick?
If the birds get a treatable illness, we must treat them.  Once the birds have been treated, they cannot be sold as Certified Organic chickens.

What do you feed the birds?
We feed a diet of only Certified organic grains.  The feed is produced at a local Certified Organic Feed Mill.  This ensures that there is no cross contamination with other feed additives.

Why did you get into Organic Farming?
We were farming broiler hatching eggs before we started organic farming.  My brother got us interested in organic farming.  After looking in to what it entailed we felt that it was a good healthy alternative way for us to stay in the agricultural industry.
We also felt that for the sake of our kids and future grand kids that we should be part of the solution not the problem.

How do I know that something is organically grown?
There is only one sure way of knowing if what you are getting is organic and that is if it has a Certified organic agency logo on it.  There are lots of different agencies, that’s why in British Columbia we have C.O.A.B.C. (Certified Organic Agency’s of British Columbia) with its easy to identify Check mark logo.

Who inspects your farm?
B.C.A.R.A. (British Columbia Association of Regenerative Agriculture) Certifies and hires 3rd party independent inspectors to inspect our farm.  This includes a detailed record check and farm tour.

Where can we buy your product?
You can buy our chicken direct from us or you can contact one of the retailers or wholesalers on our list.

Who made up all of the rules for certified organic and where can I get a copy of them?
The rules for certified organic have been around for many years and are always being re-evaluated. Our standards are C.O.A.B.C.s and can be requested from them.

Are all countries organic standards the same?

NO. In Canada the federal government, C.F.I.A. (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) and the organic industry are presently developing a set of national organic standards to ensure the integrity of products. It should be will be implemented prior to the end of 2008.
